Spiritual Formation

In Romans 12:2 we are told to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Galatians 4:19 says that Christ is being formed in us. And Hebrews 4:12 says that "the Word of God is living and active." As the Holy Spirit develops the character of Christ in us, He uses His Word to transform us and renew our mind.

The purpose of the Spiritual Formation window is to challenge us to read scripture, wrestle with it, and seek to apply it to our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. As you ponder (and pray through) these weekly submissions, may this give you a thirst for the "living water" that is contained in God's Word (Psalm 1:1-3). May you find yourself searching out these nuggets on your own, as you are "conformed to the image of Christ." (Romans 8:29

Scripture

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

            (Romans 12:3)

Thought

Paul follows this statement with a discourse on the Body of Christ, stating in verse 5 that “each member belongs to all the others”.  So how do we think of ourselves in relation to the rest of the Body?  Do other believers irritate me?  Do I question the depth of their walks with the Lord?  Do I believe that my understanding of certain things is better than theirs?  Do I put love and the unity of the Body above myself?  Or do I rather insist that my way is best?  These are serious questions – needing serious soul-searching.  When Jesus tells us to take our cross and follow Him (Matthew 10:38), He is telling us to die to ourselves.  He then says that anyone who does not do this is not worthy of Him.  So I guess He is serious about this!  Maybe if we stop thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought, we will be more likely to die to self, put others first, and follow Jesus in His example of self-sacrifice (read John 13:1-17).

Prayer

Lord Jesus, truly help me to think of myself with sober judgment and put others first.  I ask this in Your powerful Name.  Amen.
